Most people don’t pay much attention to locks. They move in and out of their homes, offices, and apartments only sparing enough time to find their keys. Until the lock breaks, that is. Then a locksmith has to be called and the entire mechanism may have to be replaced. It doesn’t have to be that way! If your lock is old or sticking, read on for an easy remedy.
- Maintaining your own locks is actually incredibly simple, and can be accomplished with just a bit of graphite powder. Most hardware stores carry it for only a couple bucks.
- Once you have the graphite powder, insert the nozzle into the keyhole and squeeze the bottle. IMPORTANT: You only need to use a small amount. Too much will clog up the lock and make the problem worse.
3. Next, slide your key in and out of the lock a couple of times. This spreads the graphite around evenly. If the lock has been sticking, be sure to turn the key a couple of times to make sure it is properly lubricated.
- It may also be a good idea to apply some graphite to the latch, to ensure that it slides easily.
And that’s it! Less than a minute to apply this simple fix, and it even extends the life of your lock by a few years. For more tips, tricks, and fixes, sign up for our newsletter
